Dating from the 1940s, the building in the Mechenstrasse in Bonn has undergone extensive renovations, and has been updated in energetic, functional and aesthetic sense. On the courtyard side a timber frame construction expands the living space, and the interiors are provided with a spacious, modern feel. The building envelope is insulated to fit modern needs, and the heating demand is reduced to a minimum of 26kWh/qm a year. The installed building utility includes a heat pump, powered by two 65m deep wells, and a solar thermal system on the roof. The project also included the redesign of the exterior areas, and the conversion of an existing work shop to an artist's studio.
